Tourism is one of the main economic and fastest growing sectors in Costa Rica and since 1995 represents the first source of foreign exchange for its economy.

The main comparative advantage of Costa Rica is its system of national parks and protected areas, which cover around 25% of the national territory, which house a rich variety of flora and fauna, estimated to contain 5% of the biodiversity of the world. In addition, Costa Rica has numerous beaches in both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, with both coasts separated by only a few hundred kilometers. Tourists can safely visit several volcanoes located in National Parks. At the beginning of the nineties, Costa Rica became known as the main poster ("poster child") of ecotourism. Ecotourism is extremely popular among foreign tourists who visit the vast number of national parks and protected areas that exist throughout the country. Costa Rica was one of the pioneers in ecotourism worldwide and is recognized as one of the few international destinations with real ecological tourism options.
